Extreme heat sweeps Kuwait as Al-Samoom winds bring dust, reduced visibility
Kuwait is currently experiencing the seasonal Al-Samoom winds, a period marked by extremely hot and dry winds that can push temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius, according to the Al-Ajeeri Scientific Center.
The center said the winds are a well-known summer weather phenomenon in the region and are often accompanied by rising temperatures and increased dust activity, which can reduce visibility in affected areas.
The warning comes as Kuwait continues to experience intense summer conditions, with the Kuwait Meteorological Center forecasting very hot weather and northwesterly winds capable of raising dust in open areas. Temperatures have been recorded near the 49–50°C range in recent days.
The Al-Ajeeri Scientific Center urged residents and motorists to take precautions during this period, especially when travelling through open areas.
It advised avoiding direct exposure to sunlight during peak afternoon hours, drinking sufficient fluids, and following safety measures during periods of extreme heat and dusty conditions.
Motorists were also encouraged to exercise caution as dust raised by strong winds can affect road visibility and driving conditions.
The center noted that Al-Samoom winds are part of the region’s summer climate pattern and typically contribute to some of the most challenging weather conditions experienced during the hottest months of the year.
