World-first remote eye surgery robot developed by Kuwait

Kuwaiti ophthalmologist and retinal surgery consultant Dr. Khaled Al-Sabti has unveiled “Rebotech,” an advanced smart robotic system designed to revolutionize remote eye surgeries, in what he described as the first innovation of its kind worldwide.

Developed in collaboration with engineer Mishari Al-Jandal and supported by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, Rebotech allows surgeons to perform highly precise eye procedures remotely while enabling specialists from around the world to participate in the same operation through advanced communication technologies.

The cutting-edge system goes beyond remote surgery by incorporating a robotic assistant to support medical teams inside the operating room.

Powered by artificial intelligence, it helps surgeons make informed decisions, minimizes potential errors, and ensures consistent precision throughout complex procedures.

Dr. Al-Sabti said Rebotech represents a major milestone in the future of ophthalmic surgery, with continued research and development underway to bring the technology into clinical use and expand access to advanced eye care for patients globally.

The project also reflects Kuwait’s growing role in medical innovation and the integration of artificial intelligence into healthcare.
