Former MP Ashour jailed for three years over public funds case

The Court of Cassation has sentenced former Member of Parliament Saleh Ashour and another accused to three years in prison with hard labor for misappropriating public funds, but acquitted them of money laundering charges.
The verdict, issued by Judge Sultan Bouresli, concerns financial dealings connected to the Al-Thaqalayn Association and alleged breaches of Kuwait’s donations laws.
The court convicted the men of embezzling public funds, while acquitting them of money laundering charges involving around 151,000 Kuwaiti dinars, reports Al-Rai daily.
The case was initially filed by the Ministry of Social Affairs, which accused Ashour and others of financial irregularities in the management of charity donations. The accused had consistently denied the charges, insisting on the legality of their financial and administrative procedures.
Earlier, the Court of Appeals had upheld a lower court verdict which had acquitted Ashour and another individual of both embezzlement and money laundering charges before the case was referred to the Court of Cassation, which issued the final verdict.
The ruling marks the conclusion of a long-running legal dispute
