Kuwait welcomes U.S.-Iran accord, calls for trust, stability and free navigation in Hormuz
- As Washington and Tehran move from confrontation to dialogue, Kuwait has thrown its support behind the landmark agreement, viewing it as a rare opportunity to reduce tensions, secure the Strait of Hormuz and strengthen regional stability through diplomacy.
As the United States and Iran move to halt hostilities and revive diplomacy, Kuwait has hailed the agreement as a significant step toward reducing regional tensions, securing vital shipping lanes and opening the door to a more stable and predictable Middle East.
The Cabinet, chaired on Wednesday by Acting Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, praised the agreement’s provisions for the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations and the safeguarding of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.
In a statement following its weekly meeting, the Cabinet also commended the diplomatic efforts of Pakistan, Qatar and other friendly countries that contributed to bringing the parties closer together and creating conditions conducive to reaching the understanding.
Kuwait reiterated its support for resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter, stressing that sustainable peace requires mutual respect, confidence-building measures and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
The government said it hoped the agreement would serve as a foundation for addressing outstanding regional issues through lasting solutions that reinforce good-neighborly relations, reject the use or threat of force and help strengthen security and stability at both the regional and international levels.
The Cabinet also called on all parties to approach the upcoming negotiations in a constructive spirit, expressing hope that continued dialogue would promote cooperation, economic prosperity and long-term stability across the region.
Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah briefed ministers on Kuwait’s diplomatic engagements in recent days, including discussions with counterparts from several countries regarding regional developments and efforts to de-escalate tensions following the U.S.-Iran understanding.
The Cabinet reviewed reports from ministries and government agencies on measures taken to maintain a high level of preparedness amid ongoing regional developments, with officials outlining plans to safeguard citizens and residents and ensure the uninterrupted provision of essential services.
Reflecting concerns over the rapidly evolving regional environment, the Cabinet said it would remain in continuous session to monitor developments and coordinate government responses as necessary.
Ministers were also briefed on a series of recent diplomatic engagements involving Kuwait’s leadership, including discussions between His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and King Charles III of the United Kingdom, as well as a phone call between His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and U.S. President Donald Trump, during which regional developments and efforts to ease tensions were discussed.
The Cabinet also reviewed the outcomes of recent Gulf Cooperation Council ministerial meetings in Bahrain, where member states discussed regional security challenges, economic cooperation and coordination on issues affecting Gulf stability.
