Belgium held by Egypt 1–1 in World Cup 2026 Group G opener
Belgium were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against Egypt in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G campaign, as the North African side produced a disciplined and spirited performance in Seattle.
The match, played at Lumen Field in Seattle, saw Egypt take a surprise early lead through Emam Ashour in the 19th minute. The midfielder unleashed a powerful strike after being set up by Mohamed Salah, giving Egypt a deserved advantage after a confident opening spell.
Belgium, featuring Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku in their attacking lineup, struggled to break down Egypt’s compact defensive structure in the first half and went into the break trailing 1–0. Egypt, meanwhile, stayed organised and dangerous on the counterattack, frustrating the European side’s attempts to find rhythm.
The turning point came early in the second half when Belgium increased their pressure and began dominating possession in advanced areas. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 66th minute when a dangerous cross into the box led to an unfortunate own goal by Mohamed Hany, bringing Belgium level.
After the equaliser, Belgium pushed for a winner with late chances falling to Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, and substitute attackers, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir stood firm with key saves to preserve the draw.
Egypt also threatened on the break in the closing stages, ensuring Belgium could not commit fully forward. The result marks a valuable point for Egypt, who continue their search for a first-ever World Cup victory, while Belgium will view it as two points dropped in a tightly contested Group G.
