Spain frustrated by resilient Cape Verde in goalless World Cup opener
European champions Spain were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by World Cup debutants Cape Verde as both sides opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H campaigns at Atlanta Stadium in the United States.
Despite dominating possession and creating the majority of chances, Spain failed to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Cape Verde side that defended resolutely throughout the encounter and earned a historic point on football’s biggest stage.
Spain piled on late pressure in search of a winner, with substitute Mikel Oyarzabal coming closest deep into stoppage time when his header from close range drifted wide following a cross from teenage star Lamine Yamal. Moments earlier, Yamal himself narrowly missed the target with a left-footed effort from the edge of the box.
Cape Verde also threatened during a tense closing spell. Diney Borges forced a save from Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón with a late header, while Ryan Mendes fired over from distance as the African side looked to snatch a dramatic victory on the counterattack.
Spain’s frustration grew as Cape Verde repeatedly blocked attempts from Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo and Yamal, while Pedri was booked in added time after a late foul as the pressure mounted on Luis de la Fuente’s side.
The result represents a major achievement for Cape Verde, whose organised defensive display and tactical discipline denied one of the tournament favourites. Spain, meanwhile, will face questions over their inability to convert dominance into goals despite controlling large portions of the match.
Group H remains finely balanced following the draw, with Spain now turning their attention to their next fixture against Saudi Arabia, while Cape Verde prepare to face Uruguay.
