The Times Kuwait Report

After dedicating nearly five decades to Kuwait’s healthcare sector and community service, Dr. Sameer Humad is preparing to turn the page on an extraordinary chapter of his life. As he bids farewell to Kuwait after 46 years, he leaves with a heart full of gratitude, cherished memories, and a legacy that has touched thousands of lives.

Dr. Humad first arrived in Kuwait on February 9, 1980, to join the Ministry of Health as a radiologist at Jahra Hospital. What began with uncertainty soon transformed into a lifelong relationship with a country he now proudly calls his second home.

One of his earliest memories remains vivid even today. Shortly after arriving at Kuwait International Airport, he accidentally left behind a folder containing his original academic transcripts. Concerned and anxious about what this might mean for his future, he was pleasantly surprised when the folder was delivered to the Ministry of Health the very next morning.

“That incident reflected the efficiency and integrity of Kuwait,” he recalls. “Little did I know then that this country would become my home for the next 46 years.”

Witnessing the Transformation of Radiology

During his long medical career, Dr. Humad witnessed radiology evolve from a film-based specialty into one of the most technologically advanced branches of medicine.

When he began practicing in the 1980s, CT scans and early MRI technologies were still relatively new, with images stored on film and diagnoses often taking considerable time. Today, radiology is fully digital, powered by advanced imaging systems and artificial intelligence that enable faster, safer, and more accurate diagnoses.

The transformation, he says, has fundamentally changed patient care, allowing diseases to be detected earlier and treatments to be tailored more precisely than ever before.

A Career Built on Service

Following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Dr. Humad temporarily relocated to India before continuing his professional development in London and Ireland, where he earned his Fellowship in Radiology from Ireland.

He later returned to Kuwait, resumed his duties within the Ministry of Health, and rose through the ranks to become Consultant Radiologist and Head of Department.

Over the years, he helped diagnose and guide treatment for countless patients while mentoring younger physicians and contributing to the continuous improvement of healthcare standards in Kuwait.

Among the most difficult aspects of his profession, he says, was communicating life-changing diagnoses to patients and their families.
“The greatest challenge was helping patients understand serious illnesses such as rare diseases and metastatic cancers with compassion and sensitivity,” he reflects.

Leadership Beyond Medicine

While his professional achievements are considerable, Dr. Humad’s contributions extended well beyond hospital walls.

As President of the Forum of Indian Doctors (FID), he championed initiatives aimed at improving community health and public awareness. Under his leadership, FID organized medical camps, anti-vaping educational programs in schools, breast cancer awareness campaigns, health screenings, medical quiz competitions, and psychological counseling initiatives.

One of his proudest achievements was reviving the Medical Quiz Competition for students and expanding medical outreach programs to labor communities and remote areas.

His leadership philosophy remained simple but effective.

“Leadership is not about always leading from the front,” he says. “Listening to every member and valuing teamwork creates a stronger and more meaningful impact.”

Kuwait: More Than a Workplace

Asked why he stayed in Kuwait for nearly half a century, Dr. Humad’s answer comes without hesitation.

“Kuwait offered not only professional opportunities but also a sense of belonging, lifelong friendships, stability, and meaningful relationships.”
Over the decades, he watched Kuwait modernize rapidly in infrastructure, technology, and healthcare while preserving the hospitality and values that make the country unique.

The friendships he formed with Kuwaiti colleagues and friends remain among his most treasured memories.

“The warmth, kindness, and hospitality of the people made me feel that Kuwait was truly my home,” he says.

Beginning the ‘Second Innings’

Now, as he prepares to relocate permanently to Mumbai, Dr. Humad describes this next phase of life as his “second innings.”

Far from retirement in the traditional sense, he sees it as an opportunity to remain active, continue serving society, spend more time with family, and pursue new interests.

His plans include community service projects, healthcare initiatives, travel, yoga, swimming, exercise, and lifelong learning.

“It is a new beginning living with purpose, sharing experience, giving back to society, and enjoying life with gratitude and balance,” he explains.

A Lasting Legacy

For young doctors entering the profession today, Dr. Humad offers advice rooted in decades of experience: remain humble, continue learning, practice with compassion, and always remember that patients are at the center of everything.

As he closes this chapter, he leaves behind a message that captures both his gratitude and affection for the country that shaped much of his life.

“After 46 unforgettable years, Kuwait was never just a place where I lived. It became my home. I leave with a heart full of gratitude for the kindness, opportunities, and sense of belonging that this beautiful country and its people have given me. Though I am moving on, a part of me will always remain here.”

For Kuwait’s medical fraternity, the Indian community, and the countless patients whose lives he touched, Dr. Sameer Humad’s journey stands as a testament to dedication, service, friendship, and the enduring bonds that transcend borders.
