UN chief expresses deep concern urges restraint amid reports of Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain

. . . condemns attacks on civilian infrastructure calls for diplomacy

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday voiced deep concern over reports that Iran had targeted Kuwait and Bahrain, warning against further escalation as tensions in the region continue to rise.

In a press statement, Guterres said he was also alarmed by reports that exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran had resumed, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The UN chief strongly condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure, stressing that international humanitarian law strictly prohibits the targeting of civilian facilities and non-military sites.

Guterres underscored the importance of fully respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, urging all parties involved to comply with their obligations under international law and international humanitarian law.

He also called for every possible precaution to be taken to ensure the protection of civilians amid the growing regional tensions.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed his support for ongoing mediation initiatives, including diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan, and urged all sides to engage constructively and in good faith to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
