President Donald Trump confirmed that the suspect is in custody following a shooting incident that prompted a security evacuation at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night.
Addressing reporters at the White House, Trump described a “room that was just totally unified” and praised law enforcement and security agencies for their rapid response.
The FBI also confirmed that a suspect is being held and is currently under investigation. According to Trump, the suspect is believed to be a man from California, and law enforcement personnel are investigating.
He described the attacker as a “lone wolf” and said he does not believe the incident is linked to the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said during the briefing that the investigation is continuing and that charges are expected to be filed shortly.
FBI Director Kash Patel added that agents are actively conducting witness interviews as part of the inquiry.
Trump also confirmed that one law enforcement officer was struck during the incident but was protected by a bulletproof vest. He praised the officer’s survival and credited the Secret Service for stopping the attack at close range.
Officials said the suspect was quickly apprehended after shots were fired near the venue, forcing the evacuation of Trump, senior officials, and hundreds of attendees. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was subsequently canceled amid the security response.
