Oman issues urgent warning over suspected naval mine in Strait of Hormuz

The Sultanate of Oman has issued an urgent maritime warning after detecting a suspected floating naval mine in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over security in one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.

Oman’s Maritime Security Centre (MSC) said the object was identified west of the inshore traffic zone within Omani territorial waters. Authorities immediately alerted all vessels operating in the area, urging extreme caution and advising ships to maintain a safe distance from any suspicious objects.

The advisory stressed the need for all mariners, fishing vessels, and commercial shipping operators to report any unusual sightings to regional naval and maritime authorities. While the object is suspected to be a mine, officials have not yet confirmed its nature, and investigations are ongoing.

So far, no disruptions to commercial shipping traffic have been reported, and maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz continues under heightened vigilance. Security forces in Oman are closely monitoring the situation as part of broader regional maritime surveillance efforts, according to news.

The alert comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region and growing concerns over maritime security in the waterway. Analysts warn that any confirmed mine threat could have significant implications for shipping costs and energy market stability.

Authorities have reiterated that the situation remains under assessment, with further updates expected once technical evaluation and clearance operations are completed. Mariners have been urged to remain alert until the object is fully identified and any potential risk is eliminated.
