Maritime security sector and the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Wednesday that at least three container ships were fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz.
Sources said a container ship flying the Liberian flag sustained damage to its bridge after being hit by gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades northeast of Oman.
The agency stated that the ship’s captain reported the approach of an Iranian Revolutionary Guard warship, and the ship was subsequently fired upon, but no fires or environmental damage were reported, and all crew members are safe, reports Al-Rai daily.
Sources in the maritime security reported that there were three people on board the warship.
The captain of the container ship, which is operated by a Greek company, reported receiving no radio communication prior to the incident, noting that the ship had initially been notified that it had received permission to cross the strait.
The agency later said a second container ship flying the Panamanian flag was fired upon about eight nautical miles west of Iran, but was undamaged and its crew members were safe.
Maritime security sources reported that a third container ship, flying the Liberian flag, came under fire at a similar distance west of Iran as it was exiting the strait. The ship sustained no damage and came to a stop in the water. The sources added that its crew was unharmed.
