US targets Iran’s trading partners with sweeping 25 percent tariff

US President Donald Trump on Monday announced the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on all goods from countries that continue to do business with Iran, escalating economic pressure on Tehran and its international partners.

In a statement posted on his social media platform, Trump said the measure would apply to “any and all business being done with the United States of America” by countries trading with the Islamic Republic of Iran. “Effective immediately, any country doing business with Iran will pay a tariff of 25 percent on any and all business being done with the United States. This order is final and conclusive,” he wrote.

The move is expected to affect several major economies, including China, Brazil, Turkey and Russia, which maintain commercial ties with Tehran. However, US officials have not clarified whether the tariff will apply to all sectors or be limited to specific types of trade, according to dw.com

The announcement comes amid growing international concern over Iran’s violent crackdown on anti-government protests. Demonstrations have spread across multiple cities, with protesters calling for the end of clerical rule that has governed the country for nearly five decades.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last week accused demonstrators of acting to please foreign powers, saying they were “ruining their own streets to make the president of another country happy,” in an apparent reference to Trump.

The White House said the administration is weighing a range of options in response to developments in Iran. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that while military action, including air strikes, is being considered, the president’s preferred path remains diplomatic engagement.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, said a channel of communication remains open between Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, suggesting efforts to keep dialogue alive despite rising tensions.
