Kuwait moves to boost power capacity as Subbiya 4 Project awaits final clearance

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is waiting for a formal response from the Ministry of Finance regarding the requested budget enhancement for the tender of the Subbiya Power Plant Project – Phase Four.

Once approved, the ministry will forward the tender to the Central Agency for Public Tenders to complete the remaining procedures.

According to senior ministry sources, the Subbiya 4 project is regarded as one of the most critical upcoming developments in Kuwait’s power sector, reports Al-Rai daily.

The sources noted that the ministry is relying heavily on its implementation to expand generation capacity and meet projected electricity demand in the coming years. A response from the Ministry of Finance is expected within the week.

Sources explained that the global market for power turbines has become increasingly competitive, with many countries accelerating their plans to boost electricity production.

This surge in demand has driven up manufacturing costs compared to previous years. They added that investing in modern, high-efficiency facilities will help reduce long-term maintenance expenses and lower fuel consumption, ultimately easing pressure on the state budget.

The Subiya 4 project, along with partnership projects such as Al-Zour 2 and 3, Al-Khairan (Phase One), and Al-Shagaya (Phase Three – first and second stages), forms part of the ministry’s broader strategy to increase production capacity.

These projects aim to secure the country’s electricity and water needs amid ongoing urban expansion and major development initiatives.
