India and UK deepen strategic partnership with new trade, education, and defense agreements

India and the United Kingdom agreed on Thursday to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai.

In a joint press statement, Modi said that under Starmer’s leadership, India–UK relations have made significant progress, highlighting the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) signed during his UK visit in July. The agreement, he noted, will lower import costs, create jobs, and expand trade, benefiting industries and consumers in both nations.

Modi praised Starmer’s visit with the largest-ever UK business delegation, describing it as a sign of “new energy and a broad vision” driving bilateral ties. He reaffirmed that the India–UK relationship is rooted in shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, emphasizing its importance amid global uncertainty, according to news reports.

The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including Indo-Pacific security, peace in the Middle East, and the Ukraine conflict, with Modi reiterating India’s support for resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

On the bilateral front, Modi highlighted growing collaboration in technology, education, and defense, noting that several UK universities are establishing campuses in India, and that both countries are advancing defense co-production and military training cooperation.

Starmer, for his part, described the CETA as a “breakthrough moment,” saying it will slash tariffs, open markets, and drive growth in both economies. He added that the two nations are building a “modern partnership focused on the future.”

Starmer also welcomed the Gaza Peace Plan, calling it “a moment of profound relief,” and urged for its immediate and full implementation, including the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to leveraging the partnership to promote economic growth, regional stability, and sustainable development.
