WhatsApp launches on-device message translation for iOS and Android

WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Meta, announced on Tuesday the rollout of a new message translation feature for both iOS and Android devices, supporting multiple languages.

Users can translate a message by long-pressing it and selecting the “Translate” option. The user then chooses the language for translation and can download it for future use, according to a WhatsApp blog post.

The feature works across individual chats, group conversations, and channel updates. Android users can also enable automatic translation for all messages in a specific chat, ensuring that every subsequent message is instantly translated.

WhatsApp emphasized that translations are performed entirely on the user’s device, protecting chat privacy and preventing the platform from accessing message content.

The rollout began gradually on Tuesday, initially supporting a limited number of languages. Android users can access translations in English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic, while iPhone users can translate messages in over 19 languages, with additional languages planned for future updates.
