Kuwait celebrates full membership in Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) held a flag-raising ceremony at its headquarters in Beijing today to mark Kuwait’s accession as a full founding member of the bank’s Board of Governors.

The event was attended by AIIB President Jin Liqun and Kuwaiti Ambassador to China Jassim Al-Najem, among other dignitaries.

Ambassador Al-Najem told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that Kuwait’s full membership represents the culmination of long-standing efforts and was made possible through support from the country’s top leadership. He described the step as a strategic move to bolster Kuwait’s role in sustainable development partnerships, particularly in Asia.

During the ceremony, Al-Najem was presented with an official certificate of full membership, symbolizing Kuwait’s active commitment to development efforts in infrastructure, energy, and environmental sectors—key areas in advancing carbon neutrality and climate resilience in the Gulf and beyond.

In his remarks, AIIB President Jin Liqun welcomed Kuwait’s membership, expressing confidence in its potential to support smart infrastructure and renewable energy projects. He emphasized that the AIIB operates on principles of trust and collaboration, and noted its successful partnerships with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Saudi Arabia and Oman.

President Jin also expressed his intention to visit Kuwait soon to discuss deepening bilateral cooperation and maximizing Kuwait’s participation in strategic financing projects across Asia and the Gulf.

The AIIB’s most recent annual meeting, held in May, resulted in the election of a new bank president, who will take office in January 2026. The next AIIB annual meeting is scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar, in 2026.

Founded in 2014, the AIIB now includes 103-member countries and plays a vital role in financing sustainable infrastructure projects across sectors such as transport, energy, communications, urban development, and logistics.
