Kuwaiti-Greek relations rooted in history, set for stronger future

Assistant Foreign Minister for Europe, Ambassador Sadiq Marafi, highlighted the deep-rooted Kuwaiti-Greek relations, describing them as ‘historic’ and extending beyond diplomacy. He noted ancient Greek visits to Failaka Island and the Kuwaiti coast as evidence of longstanding ties.
Speaking at the Greek Embassy’s National Day celebration, held at the Contemporary Art Platform and attended by numerous diplomatic mission heads, Ambassador Marafi emphasized that bilateral relations span over 60 years and reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to further strengthening them.
He emphasized the significance of the Greek Foreign Minister’s visit to Kuwait last year, which led to key advancements in cooperation, particularly in investment and tourism—sectors of great importance to Kuwaitis.
Regarding bilateral agreements, Ambassador Marafistated that efforts are underway to explore new agreements aimed at strengthening mutual cooperation.
He also noted ongoing coordination to host the Gulf-European meeting in Kuwait next October, with the final date to be determined following an agreement between the Gulf Cooperation Council’s General Secretariat and the European Union.
Schengen visa exemption for Kuwaiti citizens
On the Schengen visa exemption for Kuwaiti citizens, Ambassador Marafi highlighted that Kuwaitis can currently obtain a five-year visa and expressed hope that this issue will be discussed at the upcoming summit.
As for mutual visits between officials, he confirmed ongoing exchanges at various levels between Kuwait, Greece, and other European nations, underscoring the commitment to continued diplomatic engagement to enhance Kuwaiti-European relations.

On economic cooperation, the ambassador underscored the role of Greek companies, particularly DESFA, in Kuwait’s energy sector. He encouraged Kuwaiti investors to explore Greece’s promising opportunities, especially in energy, tourism, infrastructure, and technology.
He also emphasized the significant potential for Greek companies to contribute to Kuwait’s Vision 2035, particularly in construction, renewable energy, and urban development, stressing the importance of cooperation in achieving these ambitious goals.
Greek Revolution of 1821
Marking Greece’s Independence Day on March 25, the ambassador reflected on the Greek Revolution of 1821, describing it as a bold assertion of the people’s right to self-determination and freedom. He noted that the revolution’s core values—democracy and dignity—remain relevant in today’s world.
Diplomatic solutions to international conflicts
Regarding his country’s diplomatic role, Ambassador Ploutas stated that Greece’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council reflects the international community’s confidence in its role as a pillar of stability and peace in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans. He reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to promoting diplomatic solutions to international conflicts, safeguarding human rights, and enhancing maritime security.
