The European Parliament is set to present its newly established European Order of Merit for the first time on Tuesday in Strasbourg, marking a significant moment in the recognition of individuals who have contributed to European integration and the promotion of the bloc’s core values.
Among the inaugural recipients of the highest tier of the honor are former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and former Polish President and Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa. Zelenskyy will not attend the ceremony in person.
The award, introduced last year, is intended to recognize individuals who have played a key role in strengthening Europe’s political, democratic, and cultural foundations, including efforts to defend unity, democracy, and stability across the continent.
In addition to the top-tier recipients, several prominent figures from politics, culture, and international institutions will also be honored. These include Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and former European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet.
Former Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and members of the globally renowned rock band U2 are also among those selected to receive the distinction, reflecting the award’s broad recognition of contributions across public life.
According to the European Parliament, around 20 individuals will be honored in total, with approximately 13 expected to attend the ceremony and deliver brief remarks in Strasbourg.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola described the award as a tribute to those who have actively helped shape Europe, stating that the continent has been built by individuals who bridged divides, challenged authoritarianism, and worked through crises to secure a better future.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. local time in Strasbourg.
