Consult a doctor before taking weight loss medications, warns expert

A healthy lifestyle and diet are crucial for long-term weight management

• Weight loss medications should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

• These medications have potential side effects, including heart problems and increased cancer risk.

Dr. Adel Reza, an internal medicine, endocrinology, and diabetes consultant at Sabah Hospital, has urged individuals to consult with a doctor before taking weight loss medications. He emphasized that these medications should be prescribed and monitored by medical professionals according to established protocols.

In an interview with Al-Jarida, Dr. Reza explained that stopping weight loss medication often leads to weight regain. Therefore, adopting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a balanced diet, and engaging in regular physical activity are essential for long-term weight management. He also highlighted the importance of behavioral therapy in supporting patients on their weight loss journey.

The decision to prescribe weight loss medication, Dr. Reza noted, is made after a comprehensive medical evaluation, including a thorough review of the patient’s medical history and a physical examination. Patients undergo a series of tests before starting treatment, as some weight loss medications can increase heart rate.

Dr. Reza warned about potential side effects associated with weight loss injections, such as an increased risk of thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, psychiatric disorders, gastrointestinal disturbances, low blood sugar, nausea, and vomiting.

He emphasized that weight loss medications are suitable for certain individuals, particularly those with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 or those with a BMI between 27 and 30 who have obesity-related health conditions.

Patients must demonstrate a commitment to lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, for at least three to six months before being considered for medication.

Dr. Reza concluded by stressing the importance of consulting with a qualified healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment.
