38 dead, 24 missing in China highway bridge collapse

25 vehicles fall into the Jinqian River on July 19 after a 40-meter section of a bridge collapsed on one side of a highway in Shanglu city’s Tshawi province.

Over 3,400 professional rescuers, including personnel from ministries, armed forces, firefighters, and non-governmental teams, conducted several rounds of search operations stretching 100 kilometers downstream.

Local authorities reported on Sunday that 38 people have been confirmed dead and 24 others are still missing two weeks after a highway bridge collapse caused by flash flooding in northwest China’s Shaanxi province, according to Al Rai newspaper.

As of 6 pm on Sunday, 25 vehicles have been confirmed to have fallen into the Jinqian River on July 19 after a 40-meter section of a bridge collapsed on one side of a highway in Shanglu city’s Tshawi province. The city government reported that one person was rescued.

The bridge, which is 366 meters long and part of the Danfeng-Ningshan Highway, spans the Jinqian River. Over 3,400 professional rescuers, including personnel from ministries, armed forces, firefighters, and non-governmental teams, conducted several rounds of search operations stretching 100 kilometers downstream.
