Ministry launches inventory to identify energy guzzlers via smart meters

• The technical committees formed by several government agencies will soon finish determining the specifications of all devices that consume electrical current, which will contribute to reducing electrical loads in all buildings.

• Electricity consumption in Kuwait is among the highest compared to many countries, which may be due to the symbolic consumption tariff price compared to the production cost borne by the state.

The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy is conducting an inventory of the highest electricity-consuming buildings using data collected from the smart meter system.

Engineer Aqul Al-Aqul, the Assistant Undersecretary for the Technical Services and Main Works Sector in the ministry, said, “The ministry is currently working to inventory the buildings that consume the most electricity through smart meter readings, to call on their owners to take the necessary measures towards rationalizing electricity consumption.”

Al-Aqul pointed out in a press statement that the technical committees formed by several government agencies will soon finish determining the specifications of all devices that consume electrical current, which will contribute to reducing electrical loads in all buildings.

He stated that the ministry aims to make the buildings it constructs a model for other government agencies and private housing, emphasizing the importance of applying all means of rationalization in existing buildings as well. This includes replacing lighting with more efficient options and using water consumption tools that are more efficient.

Regarding the diesel generator maintenance contract, he explained that the necessary maintenance for these generators had been carried out and equipped according to the request of the electrical distribution networks sector in preparation for the summer.

He added that the ministry is committed to educating consumers about the importance of rationalizing water and electricity consumption through media and advertising campaigns. These campaigns inform consumers about easy methods to help them conserve resources.
