Trump calls US midterm elections most important in his lifetime

  • 210 million voters to decide Trump’s political strength in midterms
  • US voters face crucial midterm decision as Trump seeks stronger mandate

US President Donald Trump affirmed late Monday that the midterm election, due on Tuesday (today), is the most important. “This is the last day before the midterm elections, the most important midterm I believe in our lifetime,” Trump said during his closing midterm message.

He added that “now, that doesn’t happen because usually whoever is the sitting president, whether republican or democrat, good or bad, for some reason the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms.”

“If the people that voted for me and voted in the last election … just a good portion of them, we will win in a landslide,” he said, noting “But we gave this a very strong shot.”

President Trump has made his closing pitch for the midterm elections at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, saying in a nationally televised speech that the country was “booming” under Republican leadership while praising his building projects in the capital.

All 435 House of Representatives seats and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested. Voters in 36 states will also elect governors. About 210 million registered voters will decide how much power Trump will have for the rest of his presidency.
