Kuwait prioritizes water security, seeks stronger regional cooperation

Sarah Al-Mutairi highlights infrastructure development, desalination and water reuse at 17th Arab Ministerial Water Council session

Kuwait has reaffirmed the strategic importance of water security, with a focus on strengthening infrastructure, improving operational efficiency and adopting sustainable solutions to protect water resources and support long-term development.

Eng. Sarah Al-Mutairi, director of the Chemical Business Department at the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, stressed the importance of stronger Arab and international cooperation and the exchange of expertise in water resource management.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the 17th session of the Arab Ministerial Water Council in Cairo, Al-Mutairi said Kuwait continues to prioritise the water sector as part of its development plans, working to improve services, modernise infrastructure and enhance sustainability.

Kuwait’s participation in the ministerial council meetings, the 24th meeting of the Technical and Scientific Advisory Committee and the 7th Arab Water Conference reflects the country’s commitment to keeping pace with advances in water technologies and expanding opportunities for regional and international cooperation, she added.

Tackling water scarcity and climate challenges

Held under the theme “Water in the Arab Region: Partnerships for Peace and Sustainable Development”, the meetings took place under the auspices of Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, on the sidelines of the ninth Cairo Water Week 2026.

Al-Mutairi described the events as an important opportunity for Arab and international participants to exchange expertise, examine the challenges posed by water scarcity and climate change, and explore solutions that strengthen communities’ ability to respond to mounting pressures on water resources.

She said the 7th Arab Water Conference provided a strategic platform for aligning regional priorities, bringing technological innovation into water management and developing practical, implementable strategies to advance Arab water security.

These efforts also support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Desalination, water reuse and digital transformation

During the meetings, the Kuwaiti delegation reviewed innovative technologies, solutions and projects in several areas, including water desalination, wastewater reuse, digital transformation, water network management and operational efficiency.

The delegation also examined international innovations and opportunities for stronger cooperation among institutions and organisations working in the water sector, Al-Mutairi said. She reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to improving water management and drawing on regional and international experience to enhance the sustainability of resources and meet the country’s development requirements.

The discussions highlighted the importance of combining infrastructure development with technological innovation and cooperation to address water-related challenges. For Kuwait, the continued development of the water sector remains a strategic priority in supporting sustainable growth and strengthening long-term water security.
