Minister Al-Mutairi explores ways to advance Kuwait’s theatrical movement

Kuwaiti theater on the brink of a historic revival, empowered by continued political support and enhanced cooperation across government entities, the private sector, and civil society – Al-Mutairi

Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi held a coordination meeting today with representatives of theatrical production companies, institutions, and civil theater associations to explore ways of advancing Kuwait’s theatrical movement.

Speaking at the Government Communication Center, Al-Mutairi emphasized the cultural sector’s significance and the strong backing it receives from the political leadership. He said the Kuwaiti theater, now celebrating over 100 years since its inception, holds a distinguished place in both the regional and international cultural landscapes, reports Al-Rai daily.

He praised the contributions of Kuwait’s theater artistes and stressed that the younger generation is now entrusted to carry forward this legacy. He underscored the importance of continuing to develop this civilized and humanitarian art form in a way that aligns with Kuwait’s values and aspirations.

Al-Mutairi pointed out that theater is more than an art, calling it an economic engine, a tourism booster, and a professional field that requires collective efforts from the public and private sectors and civil society to enhance its impact and reach.

He affirmed that the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) plays a central role in supporting and organizing the theatrical scene and reiterated the government’s openness to all suggestions and visions that could help build a brighter future for Kuwaiti theater.

Among the key announcements, the Minister revealed that the Council had launched a study to put several state-owned theatres — including Kaifan, Al-Shamiya, Al-Salmiya, and Mishref — up for public auction to modernize and operate them year-round. Al-Dasma Theatre has already been placed for auction under this initiative.

Furthermore, he disclosed that the Ministry of Education has been approached to allocate school-based theatres in each governorate to foster a broader theatrical movement at the local level.

Al-Mutairi concluded by affirming that Kuwaiti theater is on the brink of a historic revival, empowered by continued political support and enhanced cooperation across government entities, the private sector, and civil society.

The meeting also featured input from attendees and was held in the presence of Dr. Mohammed Al-Jassar, Secretary-General of the NCCAL, and Aisha Al-Mahmoud, Acting Assistant Secretary-General for the Arts Sector.
