Why Gut Health Deserves More Attention

Ask Mira : Eating Right to Live Happy & Healthy

Gut health is one of the most important parts of overall wellness, yet many people only focus on digestion when they experience bloating or stomach discomfort. As a dietitian, I always explain that the gut affects much more than digestion. it also influences immunity, energy, mood, skin health, and even cravings.

One of the best ways to support gut health is eating a variety of foods from different food groups. Diversity in nutrition helps feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome.

Fiber-rich foods are essential because they act as fuel for healthy gut bacteria. Vegetables, fruits, oats, lentils, beans, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and whole grains all support digestion and bowel regularity. Colorful vegetables are especially important because each color provides different antioxidants and nutrients.

Don’t forget that we need prebiotics and probiotics.

Protein also matters for gut health. Eggs, fish, chicken, yogurt, and legumes help support tissue repair and overall body function. Bone broth has also become popular for a reason. It contains collagen, gelatin, and amino acids that may help support the gut lining and digestion, especially during recovery or periods of stress.

Healthy fats are another important part of digestive wellness. Olive oil, avocado, nuts, tahini, and fatty fish provide anti-inflammatory benefits and help the body absorb vitamins properly.

Drinks can either support or irritate the gut. Water remains the most important choice, while herbal teas like ginger, mint, chamomile, and fennel may help reduce bloating and improve digestion. Fermented drinks such as kefir can also provide natural probiotics that support beneficial bacteria.

Stress management is equally important because the gut and brain are closely connected. Chronic stress may affect digestion, appetite, and gut balance. Simple habits like eating slowly, sleeping well, walking daily, and reducing screen time during meals can make a noticeable difference.

A healthy gut often leads to better energy, stronger immunity, and overall better well-being.
