Vote on Russian-Chinese Middle East draft depends on regional developments

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the adoption of the draft resolution submitted by Russia and China to the UN Security Council concerning de-escalation in the Middle East depends on developments on the ground.

The ministry added in a statement carried by the Russian news agency Sputnik that the date for putting the draft resolution to a vote has not yet been finalized, noting that this is directly linked to the stability of the situation on the ground.

It explained that Moscow and Beijing continue their joint coordination in international forums, particularly the Security Council, on issues related to the Middle East, within the framework of efforts aimed at de-escalation and maintaining regional security and stability.

In a related context, the Russian Foreign Ministry clarified that the issue of deploying UN peacekeeping forces to secure the Bushehr nuclear power plant is contingent upon the approval of the Iranian side, stressing the necessity of coordination with Tehran in this regard.

It announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit China tomorrow and the day after, where he will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, covering a number of issues, including the Ukrainian crisis and developments in the Middle East.

This move comes amid continued tensions in the region, with both Russia and China emphasizing the need to push for political and diplomatic solutions to the existing crises in order to de-escalate the situation and avoid further escalation.
