Up to 1,000 dinars fine, prison for unauthorized passenger transport in Kuwait

The General Traffic Department has intensified its nationwide crackdown on illegal passenger transport and dangerous driving violations, warning offenders that penalties can reach KD 1,000 in addition to possible jail terms.

The latest enforcement campaigns, carried out across several areas under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior, resulted in the arrest of six people accused of transporting passengers for money without the required permits. Authorities also impounded vehicles involved in the violations.

Under Kuwaiti traffic law, individuals caught using private vehicles to transport passengers for hire without a permit may settle the violation with a KD150 fine. However, cases referred to court could result in prison sentences ranging from one to three years and fines between KD600 and KD1,000, or one of the two penalties.

Traffic officers additionally arrested two young motorists for engaging in illegal street racing. The drivers were referred to the relevant authorities, while their vehicles were seized pending legal action.

Security sources said the intensified campaigns are part of broader efforts by the General Traffic Department to maintain road safety, reduce reckless behavior, and curb unauthorized transport activities.

Authorities have recently stepped up monitoring through traffic control rooms, surveillance systems, and expanded field patrols. The campaigns also target reckless drivers, illegal racing activities, repeat offenders, and individuals violating residency and labor laws.

Similar operations earlier this month led to the arrest of several expatriates accused of illegally picking up passengers, with multiple vehicles confiscated as part of the enforcement measures.

The Ministry of Interior continues to urge motorists to comply with traffic regulations and warns that strict legal action will be taken against violators as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety and restore discipline on Kuwait’s roads.
