Temu faces EU scrutiny over dangerous products, risking billions in fines

The European Commission has found that Temu, the Chinese e-commerce platform with nearly 94 million monthly users in the EU, failed to prevent the sale of illegal and dangerous products, violating key provisions of the Digital Services Act (DSA).

In preliminary findings, the Commission stated that Temu’s current safeguards fall short of EU standards, posing a “high risk” to consumers. The company is also accused of misleading discounts, fake reviews, poor vendor transparency, and a potentially addictive app design, according to DW.COM

Temu, classified as a “very large online platform,” now faces the possibility of a fine of up to 6% of its global annual turnover. The company has pledged full cooperation and may still respond before a final decision is made.

“Consumers’ safety online is not negotiable in the EU,” said EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen.
