Pilot’s last wave to his children turns tragic in deadly Southend Airport plane crash

A tragic light aircraft crash at London Southend Airport Sunday afternoon claimed at least one life and led to the indefinite suspension of all flights. Eyewitnesses, described a heartbreaking moment just before the crash, when the pilot waved at his children, moments before the plane began its ill-fated takeoff roll.

The aircraft, reportedly about 12 meters long, took off shortly before 4:00 p.m., but within seconds, it veered sharply to the left, flipped on its side, and crashed head-first into the ground, erupting into a fireball visible from miles away. Photos and videos circulating online showed thick black smoke rising near the runway as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

London Southend Airport confirmed the incident involved a general aviation aircraft and that four commercial flights scheduled for the afternoon were canceled. The airport remains closed as police, air accident investigators, and emergency services continue their work on-site, according to news reports.

A massive emergency response followed the crash. The East of England Ambulance Service dispatched multiple ambulances, paramedic teams, hazardous area responders, and an air ambulance. Essex Fire and Rescue units from five towns arrived to contain the blaze and assist police and aviation authorities.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander issued a statement urging the public to stay away from the area, praising the emergency teams for their rapid response. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched a full inquiry and is expected to provide an update in the coming days as investigators work to determine the cause of the sudden loss of control after takeoff.
