Minister of Electricity launches 4th national energy saving campaign

Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, on Monday inaugurated the fourth edition of the National Energy Saving Campaign, held under the theme “Save… and Make a Difference.”

The initiative seeks to foster a culture of resource optimization and raise public awareness regarding the prudent consumption of electricity and water to ensure the long-term sustainability of the state’s resources.

Addressing the launch ceremony at the Government Communication Center, Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem underscored that the current period necessitates a unified national effort and a shared sense of responsibility to safeguard the country’s vital utilities.

He characterized the campaign as a strategic partnership between the state and the community, aiming to fortify Kuwait’s electricity and water security.

The Minister highlighted the formidable challenges facing the sector, noting that recent incidents targeting Ministry infrastructure have resulted in significant damage to power generation and desalination plants.

These disruptions led to the temporary decommissioning of several generating units and fuel reservoirs, alongside logistical delays in scheduled maintenance.

“Despite these exceptional hurdles, the resolve of the Ministry’s personnel remains steadfast,” Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem remarked, commending the technical teams for their around-the-clock efforts to maintain an uninterrupted power supply.

Regarding infrastructure development, the Minister announced that the Ministry is moving forward with several mega-projects. This includes the signing of contracts for the second and third phases of the Al-Zour power plant, which is slated to provide 2,700 megawatts (MW) and 120 million imperial gallons of water per day (MIGD), he disclosed.

Furthermore, he revealed that the winning bidder for the first phase of the Shagaya Solar Power Project (1,100 MW) will be announced in June. Tenders for the second phase of Shagaya (500 MW) and the first phase of the Al-Khiran plant-set to produce 1,800 MW and 33 MIGD-are expected to close shortly.

Dr. Al-Mukhaizeem stressed that conservation serves as the “first line of defense” against rising consumption rates that strain national infrastructure.

He called for a “societal awakening” to transition from awareness to tangible behavioral changes across all sectors. In conclusion, the Minister urged citizens, residents, and private and public entities to engage proactively with the campaign’s objectives. He emphasized that rationalizing consumption at this critical juncture is a “supreme expression of national belonging” and a vital investment in the future of the coming generations.

The event featured presentations by Eng. Khadija Boushehri, head of the Ministry’s Conservation Awareness Team, and Eng. Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim, who shared case studies demonstrating how optimized usage can lead to a significant reduction in monthly utility expenditures.
