Markets rally on US-Iran de-escalation; oil and dollar retreat

  • The U.S. dollar edged lower while the euro and British pound gained on Monday after the United States paused its air campaign against Iran, a move that eased Middle East tensions, weighed on oil prices, and lifted global market sentiment.

The U.S. dollar weakened against major currencies in early Asian trading on Monday as easing tensions between the United States and Iran improved investor sentiment and pushed oil prices lower.

The dollar slipped 0.2% against the Japanese yen to 163.585, marking its largest daily decline since July 10. The euro gained 0.2% to $1.1397, while the British pound also rose 0.2% to $1.3353.

The currency moves followed the U.S. decision to temporarily suspend its air campaign against Iran after nearly two weeks of strikes, a development that eased concerns over further escalation in the Middle East and boosted confidence across global financial markets.

Oil prices also declined sharply in early trading, with Brent crude falling about 4.7% to $92.19 a barrel as traders reduced the geopolitical risk premium amid signs of de-escalation.
