Kuwait’s road safety gets smarter with 252 AI-powered cameras
The installation of new cameras on public roads to detect seat belt and mobile phone violations has been completed and will be activated soon.
• Point-to-point cameras will calculate the distance and speed between two points, enabling authorities to detect speed violations even if drivers slow down when approaching the cameras.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bu Hassan, Assistant Director of the Traffic Awareness Department at the Ministry of Interior, revealed in an interview with a news channel that new AI-powered cameras have been installed to detect seat belt and mobile phone violations. The announcement was reported by Al Jarida newspaper.
He stated that the installation of approximately 252 cameras on public roads has begun and will be activated as soon as the installation is complete.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bu Hassan added that other cameras, known as Point-to-Point cameras, are also being utilized. These cameras calculate the distance and speed between two points, allowing authorities to determine if a driver has exceeded the speed limit between them. They will capture a violation even if the driver slows down upon approaching the cameras.
He also noted that the penalty for allowing a child to sit in the front seat will increase from five dinars to fifty dinars.
