Kuwait’s Media Ministry mandates production companies to use artists’ official names
The Assistant Undersecretary for Press, Publishing, and Publications Sector at the Ministry of Information, Lafi Al-Subaie, issued a circular to owners of artistic production, publicity, and advertising companies.
The circular emphasized the necessity of obtaining a license to produce the text and convert it into a visual and audio work before filming any artistic production. Additionally, it instructed that the artist’s name must be displayed on the artistic work exactly as it appears on their civil ID and passport, without any alterations or modifications.
Moreover, the circular also stated that it is prohibited to hold singing and musical concerts without first obtaining a permit from the competent authorities in Kuwait.
Importantly, Lawyer Khalifa Al-Yaqout stated that he had previously filed a complaint with the Ministry of Information on behalf of a Kuwaiti family. He expressed gratitude for the ministry’s response, which he said would put an end to the exploitation of the name of any noble Kuwaiti family and prevent it from being falsely attributed to individuals outside of its members.
Al-Yaqout pointed out that the complaint was filed after a rise in the use of fake names by artists, with some individuals falsely affiliating themselves with Kuwaiti families. He emphasized that these actions were causing harm by participating in roles that were offensive to Kuwaiti society and the reputation of conservative Kuwaiti families.
