Kuwait’s Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital achieves remarkable success of 149 kidney transplant operations

The Ministry of Health announced a remarkable milestone in the kidney transplant program at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital, with 149 successful kidney transplant operations performed in 2024. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 140 operations conducted in 2023.

In a press statement today, Wednesday, 25 December, Dr. Saja Sorour, Head of the Organ Transplantation Department at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital, expressed her pride in the significant achievement of performing 149 successful kidney transplant operations in 2024. This accomplishment reflects the hospital’s unwavering commitment to providing the best healthcare services to patients and continuing to advance medical care in Kuwait.

Dr. Sorour added that, the achievement of this record number of kidney transplants was made possible through the collaboration of the medical teams and supporting specialties at the hospital. She emphasized the continued commitment to increasing the number of transplants for kidney failure patients in the coming year.

Furthermore, Dr. Sorour stated that the accomplishment of 149 successful kidney transplants represents a significant step in enhancing kidney transplant services in Kuwait.

Dr. Sorour expressed her appreciation for the ongoing support from the Ministry of Health, particularly from Minister Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi and Undersecretary Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi. She also praised the vital role played by the medical teams and national initiatives, acknowledging their dedication and efforts in making this success possible.

Dr. Colin Foreman, the organ transplant consultant at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital, confirmed that the opening of the organ transplant department last March; marked a significant turning point in the hospital’s organ transplant program.

Moreover, Dr. Foreman explained that the availability of various medical specialties at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital has significantly contributed to the efficiency of the organ transplant program. This collaboration has enabled the medical team to perform more complex transplant operations, particularly for patients with serious medical conditions or obesity.

Dr. Foreman added that the development of the organ transplant department has led to a significant expansion of the program’s scope. He noted that the number of transplant operations performed has nearly doubled compared to previous years, reflecting the remarkable progress achieved. This success is a direct result of the exceptional capabilities and resources provided by the hospital.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of Health launched the Organ Transplant Department at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital last March, alongside the introduction of the National Kidney Transplant Program through family exchange.

This pioneering initiative represents a significant step forward in improving the chances of patients in need of kidney transplantation. By expanding the circle of potential donors, the program enhances the likelihood of successful transplants and alleviates the suffering of patients.
