Kuwait’s human rights efforts earn international endorsement at UN Council in Geneva

Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Counselor Nasser Al-Sumait, said the unanimous adoption of Kuwait’s Fourth National Report by the UN Human Rights Council on Friday stands as strong international recognition of the State’s sincere and comprehensive efforts to strengthen and develop its human rights framework.
Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) following the session in Geneva, Al-Sumait emphasized that Kuwait remains firmly committed to advancing its national human rights system through legislative, institutional, and field-level reforms, all in alignment with international human rights standards.
Al-Sumait noted that the report is the outcome of a serious, inclusive, and consultative national process involving a wide range of stakeholders. Among the most notable milestones presented in the report is the National Plan for Legislative Development, which reflects the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and enhancing the legislative environment to conform with global norms.
In his address to the Council, Al-Sumait reiterated Kuwait’s readiness to review the 290 recommendations submitted by member states and pledged to provide official responses during the Council’s next session. He also reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to seriously follow up on these recommendations and ensure responsible implementation on the ground.
Al-Sumait extended his deep appreciation to the Troika members overseeing Kuwait’s report —Thailand, the Czech Republic, and the Republic of Benin — for their constructive collaboration throughout the review process.
He also thanked the Permanent National Committee for the Preparation of Reports and the Follow-up of Recommendations Related to Human Rights, led by Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah, and the Permanent Delegation of Kuwait to the United Nations in Geneva, headed by Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayen, for their exceptional efforts in organizing and ensuring the success of Kuwait’s participation in this Universal Periodic Review.
