​Shaikha Al Sabah receives one of India’s highest civilian awards for promoting Yoga

Sheikha Shaikha A. J. Al Sabah, an avid yoga practitioner and founder of “Daratma” was awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the “Padma Shri” in 2025 for her efforts in promoting yoga in Kuwait.

Shaikha founded Daratma in 2014, a yoga and wellness studio that offers yoga education to individuals seeking harmony, balance, and awareness in their daily lives.

Moreover, Shaikha has been recognized for her dedicated journey to mastering and teaching the ancient practice of yoga in Kuwait. Her contributions have played a key role in promoting yoga within the region. In December, Shaikha had the honor of meeting India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his visit to Kuwait.

In a post on “X”, Modi praised Shaikha’s dedication to yoga and fitness, emphasizing her significant contributions to promoting the practice in the Gulf region. He further noted how Shaikha has distinguished herself through her passion for yoga and fitness. Their discussions also centered around ways to make yoga more popular among the youth, with a focus on expanding yoga’s influence and encouraging a healthier lifestyle among younger generations.

Sheikha Shaikha AJ Al-Sabah is a celebrated wellness advocate, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, known for her remarkable journey in the world of yoga and fitness. Beginning her yogic journey in 2001, she went on to establish Daratma, Kuwait’s first licensed yoga studio, in 2014. The name Daratma is a fusion of the Arabic word “Dar” (home) and the Sanskrit term “Atma” (soul), symbolizing a sanctuary for self-discovery and balance.
