Kuwait launches Francophonie Month, celebrations to last until March 20

Kuwait aims to join the International Organization of Francophonie soon, announced H.E. Claire Le Flécher, the French ambassador to Kuwait.

To the melodious tunes of the oud by the seashore, H.E. Claire Le Flécher, the French ambassador to Kuwait, announced the launch of Francophonie Month 2024 in the country. This celebration will continue until Wednesday, March 20 this year.

H.E. Le Flécher stated during the “Kashta” evening organized by the French embassy on Sunday 3rd March in collaboration with the French Institute in Kuwait at the Marina Hotel, and in the presence of senior diplomats, that the launch of Francophonie Month 2024 was an occasion to commemorate Francophonie in Kuwait.

The French language holds significant importance in the country and has been taught in public secondary schools since the 1960s.

She added that Kuwait has expressed its desire to join the International Organization of Francophonie during the Villiers-Cotteret summit, and it is expected that the official application for membership will be submitted soon.

She thanked His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah, Honorary Chairman of the Council for the Promotion of Francophonie in Kuwait (CPFK), for his invaluable and continuous support in promoting Francophonie in Kuwait over the years.

She highlighted that the mission of the International Organization of Francophonie was to promote the French language along with common values such as democracy, peace, women’s and children’s rights, education, and the freedom to exchange knowledge.

She added that the year 2024 will be particularly enriching for the French-speaking world, as the next Francophonie summit is scheduled to open on October 4, 2024, in the new International City of the French Language, established in Villiers-Cotteret, France. This location is entirely dedicated to the French language and French-speaking cultures, having been inaugurated on October 30 by President Emmanuel Macron.

She continued, “In 2024, France will also host the Olympics; these games, which will delight sports fans, will serve as a ‘great and joyous moment’ for the influence of Francophonie.”

H.E. Le Flécher mentioned that Francophonie Month will feature a multitude of events infused with Kuwaiti culture revolving around the French language and intercultural dialogue. These events will include the Francophone Diwaniya, conferences, film screenings, Qurqi’an, and Olympic Day.
