Kuwait Foreign Minister visits Desert Storm Memorial in Washington

. . . highlighting historic US-Kuwait alliance; memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the shared sacrifices and enduring friendship between Kuwait and the United States.

Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah visited the memorial site for Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield in Washington, D.C. during his official visit to the United States, in a move that drew attention to the enduring strategic partnership between Kuwait and the US forged during the 1991 Gulf War.

Foreign and international media have repeatedly highlighted the significance of the memorial project, which commemorates the US-led coalition that liberated Kuwait following the Iraqi invasion in 1990. The memorial, currently under construction near the Lincoln Memorial, is expected to be officially inaugurated in late 2026.

According to international news agencies, the monument is considered a symbol of gratitude from Kuwait to the American people and coalition forces that participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Kuwaiti Ambassador to Washington Sheikha Al-Zain Al-Sabah previously described the memorial as “a gift from the State of Kuwait to the American people” honoring the sacrifices made during Kuwait’s liberation.

Foreign media reports noted that the memorial project reflects the deep-rooted political and military relationship between Kuwait and the United States, with officials emphasizing shared values of peace, sovereignty and international cooperation.

The site has become an important symbolic destination for senior Kuwaiti officials visiting Washington. Previous visits by high-ranking Kuwaiti ministers were also widely covered in regional and international media, particularly as construction progresses toward completion next year.

The memorial will stand near major national monuments in the US capital and aims to preserve the legacy of the coalition forces that participated in the liberation of Kuwait in February 1991.

During his visit to Washington, Sheikh Jarrah also held diplomatic meetings with senior American officials, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, amid ongoing regional developments and heightened geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, Al-Rai daily reports.

International observers say the continued emphasis on the Gulf War memorial underscores the strategic importance of Kuwaiti-American relations more than three decades after the liberation of Kuwait, especially amid current regional security challenges.
