KISR obtains patent for developing virus-resistant surfaces

Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) said its Environment and Life Sciences Research Center obtained a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (US 12 219 959 B1) for developing virus-, and bacteria-, resistant surfaces using solid waste.

The invention, developed by Dr. Sultan Al-Salem, Dr. Fadheela Al-Salameen, and Prof. Mohamed Sherif Al-Iskandarani, marks a significant advancement in waste management and recycling in Kuwait, according to a KISR statement. The new surfaces are resistant to both COVID-19 and common bacteria that cause infectious diseases.

The institute added that the research team utilized advanced nanocoatings, incorporating a blend of metals such as nickel, silver, and copper. Various formulations were tested using different techniques to manufacture resistant surfaces from pure plastic, plastic waste, and biodegradable plastic.

KISR highlighted that the invention contributes to public health protection by reducing the spread of viruses and bacteria, thereby minimizing infection risks, particularly in public spaces and healthcare facilities.

The project supports environmental sustainability by repurposing solid plastic waste in the production of resistant surfaces, helping to reduce waste accumulation and promote eco-friendly practices.

The institute affirmed that the invention also carries economic benefits by transforming waste into valuable products, thus opening new opportunities for economic growth and supporting sustainable development drive.
