ILOA hosts Dr Kumar for an eye-opening anti-vaping session

The Indian Learners’ Own Academy (ILOA), in collaboration with the Indian Doctors Forum (IDF), recently hosted a compelling Anti-Vaping Orientation to educate students on the dangers of tobacco use and vaping.

The event began with the introduction of the guest speaker Dr. Sunil Kumar, a renowned Pediatric Surgeon from the Ibn Sina Hospital, Kuwait, by the school Principal.

Known for his vast medical expertise and global recognition, Dr. Kumar delivered an impactful session emphasizing early prevention, stating: ‘You have to stop before you start.’ His vast medical experience, research contributions, and international recognition set the tone for an impactful session.

He highlighted the significance of World No Tobacco Day and the troubling accessibility of tobacco-based products, especially to youth in India. Stressing that smoking often begins in adolescence, Dr. Kumar delved into the severe health consequences of tobacco use, including life-threatening diseases and cancer, reminding the students, “Once you start, you may not be able to stop ever.”

Addressing the influence of peer pressure, advertising, and misconceptions, he debunked common myths and explained the nature of benign and malignant tumors using visuals. He also discussed smoking’s effects on unborn babies and encouraged students to be positive influences at home, especially when family members smoke.

Dr. Kumar then shifted focus to vaping, calling it a modern form of smoking often glamorized through products designed to resemble fashionable items like jewelry. He exposed the harmful substances in e-cigarettes, such as flavoring agents linked to “popcorn lung,” and explained the dangers of secondhand and thirdhand exposure. Students learned how to identify signs of vaping and resist peer pressure with confidence.

The session concluded with students taking an oath to lead a tobacco- and vape-free life, pledging to make healthy choices and inspire others. A heartfelt vote of thanks marked the end of a powerful, awareness-driven event that left a lasting impact on all participants.

Dr. Kumar was honored with a plant as a token of gratitude.
