Global recognition for first Kuwaiti and Arab Surgeon Dr. Al-Refaei, joins elite 2025 U.S.-European surgical program

The American Surgical Association has announced the selection of Dr. Waddah Al-Refaei, a Kuwaiti physician and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Creighton University, to participate in its 2025 Scientific Exchange Program with the European Surgical Association — making him the first surgeon from Kuwait, the Gulf region, and the Arab world to achieve this distinction.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency on the sidelines of the 31st annual meeting of the European Society of Surgery in Geneva, where the honor was formally announced, Dr. Al-Refaei expressed deep pride and gratitude.

“This recognition is not only a personal milestone but also a reflection of the unwavering support our medical sector continues to receive from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah,” Al-Refaei said.

He noted that this selection underscores the global recognition of Kuwait’s medical talents and the country’s growing stature in international healthcare forums.

Dr. Al-Refaei affirmed that his mission remains steadfast in serving both Kuwait and the broader cause of global health. He also stressed the critical role of scientific collaboration and the exchange of expertise in elevating Kuwait’s healthcare system.

He extended his sincere appreciation to the American Surgical Association for the honor and expressed his eagerness to actively contribute to the exchange program, which he believes will further reinforce Kuwait’s presence on the global medical stage.
