Dr Al-Huwailah tells cooperatives board members ‘Protect Public Money’

Social Affairs Minister tightens oversight on cooperatives, orders strict accountability

Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah has stressed that protecting Kuwait’s public funds and safeguarding shareholders’ money within cooperative societies are “red lines,” warning that favoritism, conflicts of interest, and misuse of authority will not be tolerated.

Speaking to appointed members of cooperative society boards, Al-Huwailah said their role is a national responsibility aimed at strengthening governance, transparency, and integrity within the cooperative sector, rather than seeking prestige or publicity. She emphasized that all members represent the Ministry of Social Affairs and must fully comply with laws and regulations without selectivity or leniency.

The minister instructed board members to reject gifts, privileges, external pressures, and any interference that could compromise impartiality or create conflicts of interest. She also urged them to remain independent from influence by relatives, friends, or associates, stressing that protecting cooperative assets, investment branches, and shareholders’ funds is among the ministry’s top priorities.

Al-Huwailah called on members to prepare detailed oversight and reform plans, document violations professionally, and submit reports promptly to the ministry and relevant authorities before issues escalate. She stressed that oversight reports must be objective and accurate because they could lead to serious decisions, including dissolving boards of directors or initiating legal action.

She further underlined that members’ duties go beyond attending meetings and include field inspections, monitoring service quality, ensuring maintenance standards, and verifying compliance with municipal and environmental regulations. Any signs of corruption, negligence, or violations, she said, must be reported immediately.

The minister also warned against leaking official information or discussing oversight matters on social media or association-affiliated platforms, stating that violations could result in cancellation of appointments and legal accountability. She instructed members to avoid media statements and maintain complete confidentiality regarding their work.

Al-Huwailah affirmed that the ministry is committed to reforming the cooperative sector, enhancing governance standards, and addressing shortcomings in several associations. She concluded by reiterating that Kuwait’s interests, the protection of public funds, and enforcement of the law remain absolute priorities that cannot be compromised.
