DESFA unveils energy innovations and partnerships at its first Kuwait event

DESFA, Greece’s Gas Transmission System Operator and KIPIC’s partner in managing the Al-Zour LNG import terminal, marked a significant milestone by hosting its first event in Kuwait on February 12, 2025. Titled “Unlocking the Future of Energy: A Deep Dive into DESFA”.
The event highlighted innovative strategies and technological advancements while exploring collaboration opportunities to drive the transition toward more sustainable and cleaner energy systems.
The event brought together industry leaders, government officials, academics, and stakeholders from various sectors to explore the evolving energy landscape in Europe and Kuwait while fostering stronger synergies between the two countries.
Designed to offer an in-depth understanding of DESFA’s crucial role in natural gas transmission, the forum also highlighted the company’s active contribution to the transition toward renewable energy solutions.
The event was made possible through the ongoing support and expertise of its strategic partner in the region, Energy Services Middle East (ESME), led by Managing Director, Mr. Claude Jamal.
The event was honored by the presence of His Excellency Ioannis Plotas, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to Kuwait and Bahrain, and His Excellency Andreas Panagiotou, Ambassador of Cyprus to Kuwait.
The opening remarks by DESFA CEO Maria Rita Galli, Greek Ambassador Ioannis Plotas, and Konstantinos Maroulis, DESFA’s LNGI O&M Contractor Representative and Plant Manager at KIPIC, set the stage for an insightful discussion.
CEO Galli emphasized the strong partnership between Greece and Kuwait and highlighted DESFA’s expertise in managing world-class gas infrastructure. This was exemplified by the operational excellence achieved at KIPIC’s Al-Zour LNG Terminal and DESFA’s experience with the Revithoussa LNG Terminal, a key pillar of Southeast European energy security and supply diversification.
During her welcome address, DESFA CEO Maria Rita Galli stated that the event is an opportunity to introduce their company and highlight its extensive experience in Kuwait over the past four years, operating the KIPIC LNGI Terminal with excellence. This allows them to share their expertise as a European gas TSO and demonstrate their commitment to address the energy trilemma—ensuring availability, affordability, and sustainability—by leveraging core competencies and knowledge.
DESFA’s executives showcased best practices and presented the company’s integrated energy solutions, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability and ESG reporting. They also provided insights into DESFA’s net-zero master plan and its strategic commitments toward a more sustainable energy future.
During the event, DESFA emphasized its ongoing efforts to modernize Greece’s energy infrastructure, enhance energy security, and drive decarbonization.
The company showcased key initiatives focused on integrating green energy sources, including hydrogen, biomethane, and renewable gases, alongside innovative decarbonization solutions such as carbon capture, management, and storage. These efforts position DESFA as a key player in shaping a sustainable energy future.
A dynamic panel featuring Mr. Abdullah Al-Ajmi (Team Leader Gas Operations, KIPIC), Mr. Ioannis Chomatas (Chief Asset Development Officer, DESFA), and Mr. Konstantinos Maroulis (KIPIC/LNGI O&M Contractor Representative & Plant Manager, DESFA) provided valuable insights into LNG’s role as a reliable and cleaner energy source.
The discussion highlighted LNG’s function as a bridge fuel in the energy transition for both Europe and Kuwait, along with the growing importance of advancing the carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain.
DESFA’s event in Kuwait reinforced its commitment to innovation and operational excellence as a trusted energy partner in the region. It served as a platform to explore collaborative efforts and synergies aimed at accelerating the global transition to cleaner energy. DESFA extended their sincere appreciation to all participants for attending their first event in Kuwait, with special thanks to the representatives from the K companies for their valuable presence and support.
