Civil Engineers considered to tackle Mathematics Teacher shortage in Kuwait

The Ministry of Education is grappling with a significant shortage of male Mathematics teachers across various educational levels, pushing it to explore fundamental solutions to overcome this challenge and maintain the efficiency of the educational process.

The Acting General Supervisor of Mathematics, Dalal Al-Hajraf, presented a proposal to the acting Undersecretary of the Ministry, Mansour Al-Dhafiri, outlining four key solutions to address the growing shortage of male mathematics teachers.

The proposal includes increasing the financial allowance for supervisory roles, such as Head of the Mathematics Department and Technical Supervisor, while revoking this allowance if individuals transition to administrative positions.

Importantly, the proposal also suggests increasing financial incentives for male students majoring in mathematics at Kuwait University to encourage more enrollments in the field.

Additionally, the proposal recommends allowing Gulf students and children of Kuwaiti women to join the mathematics major at the College of Education to help address the shortage of male students.

Lastly, the proposal advocates for accepting civil engineering graduates for mathematics teaching positions to expand the pool of qualified candidates for educational roles.

Furthermore, Al-Hajraf emphasized that field observations have shown a steady decline in the number of male Kuwaiti mathematics teachers across all educational levels, raising concerns about a severe shortage in the coming years, particularly in supervisory roles such as department heads and technical supervisors.

Al-Hajraf highlighted the decreasing number of Kuwait University graduates specializing in mathematics and the growing reluctance to pursue this field, exacerbating the issue.
