Catholic community in Kuwait celebrates first anniversary of Pope Leo XIV’s election

Diplomats and faithful gather at Holy Family Co-Cathedral as Archbishop Eugene Nugent leads Special Mass honoring Pope Leo XIV anniversary mass

The Catholic community in Kuwait came together in prayer and celebration on May 8, 2026, to commemorate the first anniversary of the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church.

A special Holy Mass was held at the Holy Family Co-Cathedral in Kuwait City at 9:15 a.m., drawing members of the faithful, clergy, diplomats, and distinguished guests from across the country’s diverse international community.

The Mass was presided over by His Grace Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent, the Apostolic Nuncio representing the Vatican in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. Archbishop Nugent has served as the Holy See’s diplomatic envoy to the Arabian Peninsula since his appointment by Pope Francis on January 7, 2021.

The solemn occasion reflected both the spiritual significance of the anniversary for Catholics in Kuwait and the broader message of dialogue, coexistence, and peace shared by the Catholic Church in the region.

Members of the diplomatic corps and invited guests attended the ceremony, underscoring the importance of the event within Kuwait’s multicultural and religiously diverse society.

May 8 marks the historic day in 2025 when the College of Cardinals elected Pope Leo XIV as the new leader of the Catholic Church, succeeding Pope Francis and beginning a new chapter in the Vatican’s global mission.

The Holy Family Co-Cathedral, the principal Catholic church in Kuwait, serves as a spiritual center for thousands of worshippers from different nationalities and backgrounds, reflecting the country’s long-standing environment of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

The anniversary Mass concluded with prayers for global peace, unity among peoples, and continued harmony among religious communities in Kuwait and around the world.
