In his first major public address since leaving office, former U.S. President Joe Biden delivered a strong critique of the Trump administration’s social policies—particularly on Social Security—warning of deepening national divisions.
Speaking at the Advocates, Advisors, and Representatives of People with Disabilities conference in Chicago, the 82-year-old Biden stated, “We cannot continue as a nation so divided, so divided.” He emphasized the unprecedented rift between Trump supporters and Democrats, declaring, “We’ve never seen a divide like this before,” according to international media reports.
Biden accused the new administration of causing significant damage in less than 100 days, including the dismissal of around 7,000 government employees. He said these cuts disrupted key government operations, including shutdowns of official websites due to slashed IT budgets.
Calling Social Security a “sacred promise,” Biden expressed deep concern over public fears of delayed or halted benefits, highlighting the unprecedented uncertainty surrounding the program’s future. Social Security is a vital U.S. program offering financial assistance to retirees, people with disabilities, and families of deceased workers.
“People are really worried right now,” he added. “For the first and only time in history, there is a fear that Social Security benefits will be delayed or stopped.”
