Asian and African Football bodies back Infantino for fourth FIFA term

Infantino gains strong re-election support ahead of 2027 FIFA presidency vote as major federations rally behind the incumbent president as FIFA leadership race takes shape

The Asian Football Confederation and the Confederation of African Football have officially announced their support for Gianni Infantino in his bid for a fourth term as president of FIFA.

The announcement came following a meeting held on the sidelines of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, where CAF confirmed it had unanimously agreed to back Infantino in the upcoming 2027 election.

The AFC also pledged full support, with its president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa stating that FIFA is currently in its strongest position and reaffirming Asia’s continued backing of Infantino since his initial election in 2016.

Together, the Asian and African confederations hold 101 votes out of the total 211 in the FIFA presidential election, giving their endorsement significant weight in the upcoming race.

Earlier, the CONMEBOL had also expressed its support for Infantino, further strengthening his position ahead of the vote.

Infantino assumed office in 2016 following the corruption scandal that led to the resignation of his predecessor Sepp Blatter, and was subsequently re-elected in 2019 and 2023.

Although FIFA statutes limit the presidency to three terms, Infantino remains eligible to run again, as his initial term from 2016 to 2019 is not counted under the current rules, paving the way for his candidacy for the 2027–2031 term.
