Al-Ghanim urges strategic planning to safeguard Kuwait’s energy, water security

With tensions between Iran and Israel currently seems to have subsided, with temporary lull in tension between Iran and Israel, offering a window of relative peace and a temporary lull in navigational activity with security prevailing in the Strait of Hormuz, international and geopolitical affairs researcher Abdullah Khaled Al-Ghanim is calling on Kuwait to take advantage of this calm to strengthen its sovereignty over energy and water resources.

In a press statement, Al-Ghanim emphasized that the current lull offers a critical opportunity for Kuwait to adopt a proactive and strategic approach — one that balances leveraging the period of stability while preparing for potential future crises.

He proposed a dual-track strategy — maximizing offshore oil reserves to a level that reflects Kuwait’s cumulative production capacity and enhancing sovereign reserves of consumable water to ensure resilience in the face of emergency disruptions.

Al-Ghanim warned that since oil is the lifeline of Kuwait’s economy, any disruption in exports — even for a single day — can cause significant economic distress.

He recommended Kuwait raising its external oil reserves to a target ceiling of 450 million barrels, or as much as current infrastructure allows.

This would provide a crucial buffer in case of escalating regional instability or a temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy transport.
