Portugal’s face-covering ban takes effect Sept 23; violators face fine ranging between 400 to 3,000 euros

Kuwait Embassy in Lisbon has urged its citizens visiting Portugal to take note of a new law

The Kuwait Embassy in Lisbon has urged Kuwaiti citizens visiting Portugal to take note of a new law restricting the use of clothing or other coverings that conceal or prevent the face from being visible in public places. The law will take effect on September 23.

In a statement issued Saturday, the embassy said violations of the new law will carry fines ranging from 400 euros to 3,000 euros. The legislation prohibits covering the face on roads and in public places, as well as in locations providing services to the public. The restrictions also apply to sporting events and activities and demonstrations, according to the embassy.

The law also criminalizes forcing another person to conceal their face through threats, violence, coercion or abuse of authority. Such offenses can carry a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine, or both, with tougher penalties applicable when the affected person is a minor.

The embassy called on Kuwaiti citizens to respect Portugal’s laws and regulations during their visits and to familiarize themselves with local legal requirements to avoid possible legal action or fines.

For assistance or inquiries, Kuwaiti citizens can contact the embassy’s emergency number at 00351 916 666 645 or the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry’s Consular Communication Center at 00965 159. The embassy said it remains ready to provide the necessary assistance and guidance in accordance with applicable rules and procedures.

The Portuguese National Assembly approved the legislation on July 17. The law is scheduled to enter into force 30 days after publication in the country’s Official Gazette on August 24.
