Kuwait marks 36th anniversary of Iraqi invasion, honors martyrs, national unity
Kuwait today marks the 36th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion of the country on August 2, 1990, a defining chapter in the nation’s history that continues to stand as a symbol of national unity, resilience and the sacrifices made to restore Kuwait’s sovereignty and independence.
The occasion honors the memory of the martyrs and all those who defended Kuwait’s freedom, constitutional legitimacy and territorial integrity during the seven-month occupation.
It also serves as a reminder of the unity displayed by Kuwaitis, who stood firmly behind the country’s leadership in the face of aggression.
In the early hours of August 2, 1990, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait, occupying the country by force.
During the occupation, Kuwait witnessed widespread destruction, including attacks on civilian and military facilities, arrests, killings, torture, looting and intimidation of the population.
Despite the occupation, Kuwaitis organized a determined resistance movement that carried out operations against the occupying forces.
Others supported the resistance through healthcare, food distribution, logistics, communications and media activities, ensuring essential services continued under extremely difficult conditions.
Kuwaiti women also played a significant role by supporting resistance efforts, transporting supplies and weapons, participating in military operations and assisting until Kuwait was liberated on February 26, 1991.
On the diplomatic front, Kuwait’s leadership worked tirelessly to rally Arab and international support for the country’s legitimate cause.
The international community responded swiftly, with the United Nations Security Council adopting Resolution 660 on the day of the invasion, condemning Iraq’s actions and demanding the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of its forces.
Subsequent UN resolutions paved the way for the formation of a multinational coalition, with Arab and international forces assembling in Saudi Arabia before launching Operation Desert Storm, which resulted in the liberation of Kuwait in February 1991.
The anniversary continues to highlight the importance of national unity, international cooperation and the enduring values of patriotism.
It also pays tribute to the courage and sacrifices of Kuwait’s martyrs while reaffirming the nation’s commitment to preserving its sovereignty and strengthening these values for future generations.
